Please save the date for the annual NCWL Fundraiser on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2008. It will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Hilltop Room of the beautiful Carneros Inn.
We have the following upcoming speakers for NCWL:
August 20: Leslie Harden, Chair of 2008 Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE) Commission - She will speak about the history and purpose of the JNE Commission of the State Bar, the standard elements of any JNE investigation and evaluation, and tips and pitfalls of the judicial application process from the JNE's standpoint. Her presentation will qualify for one hour of MCLE.
September 17: Pamela Samuels Young, Attorney and Best-Selling Author - She will speak on "Pursuing Your Passion Despite Your Day Job." Pamela’s fast-paced novels, Every Reasonable Doubt and In Firm Pursuit, have been described as “John Grisham with a sister’s twist!” Both books, published by Harlequin’s Kimani Press imprint, are Essence magazine bestsellers. A desire to see engaging female and African-American attorneys depicted in today’s mainstream legal fiction motivated Pamela to start writing despite a busy legal career. Pamela is an in-house employment attorney for a large corporation in Southern California, an adjunct professor at the University of Redlands’ School of Business and the legal columnist for Global Woman magazine. She received her law degree in 1990 from UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law. She still finds time to serve on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Chapter of Mystery Writers of America. You can find out more about this fascinating woman on her website.
October 15: Marlo Cohen, Legal Aid Staff Attorney/Pro Bono Coordinator and Development Director - Ms. Cohen joined Legal Aid in January of 2008, and she will be speaking about Legal Aid's Pro Bono program. Prior to joining Legal Aid, Marlo was an associate in the Labor and Employment group of Dickenson Peatman and Fogarty. Before law school, Marlo was a public policy analyst on women's issues in Washington, DC, and assisted battered immigrant women throughout the state of Iowa in their immigration and family court proceedings. Marlo also served in the Peace Corps in Honduras, Central America, where she became fluent in Spanish. Following law school Marlo served as law clerk to several judges. Marlo presently serves on the Board of Directors of Napa Emergency Women's Services (NEWS) and is a graduate of Leadership Napa Valley-Class 20. Marlo received her law degree from Temple University School of Law (2003) and her Bachelor of Arts in piano from Tulane University (1992).
November 19: Rachel J. Markun, Attorney - She will speak about employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). Ms. Markun is a Partner with Johanson Berenson LLP and advises clients regarding the corporate, tax and fiduciary issues relating to ESOPs and employee benefit plans. She has represented retirement plan fiduciaries and financial institutions in connection with legislative and regulatory initiatives relating to the Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, the federal securities laws, the California tax laws and the California laws relating to partnerships and limited liability companies. She has extensive tax expertise relating to tax-exempt entities, including matters involving unrelated business tax issues. Ms. Markun is a frequent lecturer for The National Center for Employee Ownership, the National Employment Law Institute, the Practicing Law Institute, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California, the Institute for Fiduciary Education and the National Council of Investment Law Attorneys. She is the co-author of The Fiduciary Responsibilities of Employee Benefit Plan Fiduciaries under ERISA (Institutional Real Estate, Inc. Publications 1996) and the Attorney’s Guide to Pension and Profit-Sharing Plans (California Continuing Education of the Bar 1994). Ms. Markun received a B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1977 and her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1981. Her presentation will qualify for one hour of MCLE.
